Hornsea Beach, Hornsea 30.9 miles
First, don’t worry about the brown water! It’s the quantity of sediment raised by the tide, the water quality is actually very high and it is still Blue Flagged.
Lifeguard cover is decided on a seasonal basis, but you can find out by ringing the Foreshore Office on the number given. Local facilities described as ‘cheap and cheerful’, with an award winning promenade festooned with chip shops.
Bridlington South Promenade 31.9 miles
Bridlington South Promenade Beach is very popular with families especially during the holidays.
Deckchairs are available for hire from several rental points to if you don’t want to tote everything along with you. There are also public toilets handily beachside and in the peak season there is a first aid station and lost children’s contact point that hopefully you won’t need!
Bridlington Beach 32.2 miles
Bridlngton Beach is a traditional family resort with beaches that have been declared among the country’s best for making sandcastles, not least because they are so scrupulously clean.
Swimming is okay but watch out for the groynes, and lifeguard cover is from July through August.
Immediate facilities include toilets with disabled facilities, beach huts and deck chairs for hire (details at seafront), first aid post and lost child centre.
Mappleton Beach 32.4 miles
This sandy and shingle beach is brilliant for a family stroll, and if you’re feeling brave, why not roll up your trousers and for a quick paddle in the sea? Be careful – it might be a bit cold! Once the tide goes out, there’s loads of space for your little runs to run about and let off steam.

Cayton Bay 32.5 miles
Don’t worry, there’s a lifeguarding service here. Cayton Bay is also a favourite among bird watchers and fossil hunters, so if you’ve got animal enthusiasts or mini explorers who love finding things, this yorkshire beaches should definitely be on your list.

Filey Beach 33.1 miles
Filey Beach offers a 5 mile stretch of clean, sandy, award winning beaches for traditional family beach days.There are not many modern facilities, but you can watch the fishermen mending and casting their nets, and there are plenty of local heritage and nature trails in the area, plus Filey Brigg, a haven for a variety of birds and wildlife.
Scarborough North Bay 33.8 miles
Scarborough North Bay in Yorkshire is a great beach spot, and it has all the attractions of a seaside resort.
This long stretch of golden sandy shores is perfect for a sandcastle competition, and when you’re done, why not take off your shoes and go for a quick dip in the sea? There’s bright beach huts behind it, the ruins of an 11th century castle, and you could even go rock pooling here – phew! An awful lot of fun to be had here.

Whitby West Cliff Beach 38 miles
There are several shallow laying shipwrecks off the coast for divers to explore, lots of traditional amusements, including a summer theatre, and a museum close to the majestic ruins of Whitby Abbey on the cliff top.
The East Cliff stands above a very rocky coast full of fossils (check the tides before venturing down though, it comes back very fast) and the Magpie Cafe is also at this end, being one of the most highly regarded fish and chip shops in the country, though apparently the queues do reflect this!
Immediate facilities include toilets with disabled access, first aid post, lost child centre, beach huts for hire and cafes and restaurants nearby.
Other children’s activities on the West Cliff include bumper boats, trampolines, pitch and putt, and crazy golf. There is also a tourist shop selling buckets and spades and ice creams. The large west cliff car park is near the Whitby Leisure centre.
Hayburn Wyke Beach 36.5 miles
Looking for a great rocky beach to explore with the family? Hayburn Wyke is a great spot for a family adventure, and that’s great for little explorers.
Once you emerge from the costpath, you’ll come out next to not one, but two spectacular waterfalls! Hiding in the rocks, keep your eyes peeled out for little creatures hidden among the rocks and boulders, plus it’s a great spot for some fossil hunting. Bring your family pooch along too, because this beach is all dog friendly.
